Everything is designed. Few things are designed well.
I love this quote from Brian reed. Many clients tend to ask why design is important, I mean if I can earn a fair living with what I have what is the need to stay updated and spiffy. Now with my 20 years in the design industry, I can say this for certain that last season is not on and certainly not in. It is not just about looking good, it is about being relevant. It is about staying tuned to the user experience. Google did it, Facebook did it.
But what are the signs that it is time to change? When is the best time to redesign your website?
Here are some recent signs that you might want to consider and benchmark against.
1. Social Media
Social networks have taken a fair share of the consumers internet time. The questions that then comes up is – Is my website social media friendly? This is not just a matter of putting up media icons on the page, but giving the consumer a chance to engage at every step, maintaining a look and feel across your web presence etc. If you are not sure you might want to read this post by Mallory Woodrow, 9 Tips for Integrating Social Media on Your Website.
2. Smart phones
We all want to be surfing while on the move. A game at the airport or the need to check our mails on holiday makes mobile interface essential for certain businesses. Is your website mobile device friendly? To quote Tim Roe from the article listed here “The e-commerce winners will be those that make it easy to shop, whether the customer is behind a desk or on the move.” E-commerce here can be replaced, but the idea remains the same. Mobile web – The game changed.
Trust Apple to be a reason to change our behavior and I say this with a lost of respect. It is often now that clients walk up to me and ask how will my website behave on the iPad. Very much like many smartphones the iPad touch screen demands intuitive design and as the consumers lap it up we need to get geared to provide for them.
